TWENTY teams are expected to join the first leg of the Philippine Sports Commission-Cebu City Sports Commission Olympic Development series beach volleyball tournament on Feb. 22 at the Fort San Pedro sand courts the Plaza Independencia playgrounds.
PSC beach volleyball consultant Eric Lecain said the series of tournaments will be their way of identifying the players who might one day play in the Asian Games and in the Olympics.
“I am hoping all players from all over Cebu will join the event,” said Lecain.
Lecain said that CCSC Chairman Edward Hayco is determined to send a men’s and women’s beach volleyball team to the Olympic qualifiers next year for the 2016 Olympics.
“Hayco is determined to send a Cebu beach team to the Olympic qualifiers. Beach volleyball is not even his sport but he shares the passion that I and the players from Cebu all have,” Lecain said.
The Cebu City beach volleyball team earned the chance to represent the country in major international tournaments after they topped the Philippine National Games.
Lecain said the teams will be preparing for three Olympic qualifier tournaments--the
East Asia Zonal, South East Asia and Asia.
Meanwhile, Hayco said he believes in the beach volleyball developmental program and before the year ends, they can spot the potential players.
“We are very confident that we will be able to produce an Olympian in the near future.
But just like dancesport, we have to first create the culture and character of an Olympian in our athletes. They have the athletic competence. But we need to develop the discipline and perseverance side,” said Hayco.
