LEFT for dead for several years, Cebu women’s basketball program gets a boost from no less than the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) itself.

Since the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) ceased its women’s basketball program, aspiring lady players were left at the sides, their skills rotting and hopes dying.

Now, they may rekindle their passion as the highest sports body, the PSC, is taking notice of their needs and decided to give the sport a chance.

“PSC commissioner Atty. Jolly Gomez is giving us (CCSC) funding for a women’s basketball program,” Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) Commissioner Michael Sy told reporters.

In the recently concluded Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) Meet, girls basketball was included, with Cebu Province winning the gold medal over Danao City.

But women’s basketball stopped at the high school level since it is no longer included in the collegiate level, except in the Manila competitions.

“PSC sees a bright future for women’s basketball, which could go as far as the Olympics, so they wanted to push this program throughout the country and in Cebu. The CCSC is the implementing agency.

They will be providing the budget for the operations. All we need to do is it to have a program for women’s basketball and we are doing this through a tournament,” Sy added.

Manila schools have also intensified their recruitment program for female cagers.

A Sun.Star Cebu source in Manila believed that the Philippine’s women’s basketball program found a generous patron from a big conglomerate.

“We will start this program by calling an open tryout in the coming days. We are also calling companies to come out and sponsor uniforms for the teams,” Sy said.
