Reaping rewards

FOR the first time in many years, Cebu City came up without a title in the basketball competition of the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association.

This year, the secondary division title was maintained by Palarong Pambansa champions Mandaue City bannered by Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, while the elementary division was dominated by a selection of players from Cebu Province.

For Mandaue City’s coach Rommel Rasmo, he said the victory was the sweetest because they were reaping the rewards of 10-month’s worth of sweat and sacrifice of his players.

“In 2013, we looked forward to competing two major events—the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) and the Cviraa. Hindi natuloy ang Cesafi, na move naman ang Cviraa,” said Rasmo.

Rasmo added that his players had trained hard for these events and he was worried that the postponements would douse the fire in them. But he was wrong.

“It makes me so happy to see that they remained hungry and that was what got us the victory,” said Rasmo.

Mandaue City defeated Cebu City, 67-57, but Rasmo said had it not been for his players’ will to win, they would have lost.

“It was such a close fight early on as Cebu City gave such a good fight. It was just in the later part of the game when Cebu City seemed defeated,” said Rasmo.

The Cesafi juniors basketball was cancelled towards the end of the 2013 season after Cesafi was caught in a legal battle with the University of San Carlos due to the validity of one of its players.

The Cviraa, on the other hand, which was usually held in November, was moved twice after the region was devastated by two tragedies—the Magnitude 7.1 earthquake and super typhoon Yolanda.

Rasmo said that before focusing on their title defense, they have the National Basketball Training Center national finals set in March.

“This is really a good exposure for the team as we are gunning to defend our title in the Palarong Pambansa.
