MANILA -- Joe Devance scored four straight points in the last 3:36 to lift San Mig Coffee past Rain or Shine, 77-76, for a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven titular series Wednesday in the 39th PBA Philippine cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Both teams played good defense all-throughout, resulting to game that had no team scoring more than 80 points. Devance’s last basket for a 77-74 lead in the last 2:59 turned out to be the Coffee Mixers final score. Gabe Norwood scored to move the Elasto Painters to within a point, 76-77, with still 1:24 remaining.
“What an awesome game! It was a back and forth game couple of times. They got the chance to take contraol. The two three-point shots we made before the half was really the key. Then they came out in the second half, they were like a house on fire,” said San Mig coach Tim Cone.
Jeff Chan had a chance to grab the lead in the dying seconds but missed from the three-point area, allowing the Coffee Mixers to escape with the victory and avoid a repetition of Game 1 when they faltered in the crucial stretch. San Mig lost the opening game in the series, 83-80, but bounced back in the second with an 80-70 triumph.
Peter June Simon paced San Mig with 14 points, Devance settled with 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
