THE grandest football festival of the Cebu City’s football calendar, the Thirsty Football Cup, kicks off this afternoon at the Cebu City Sports Center football pitch.

A total of 46 teams are playing this afternoon in six divisions - Girls Under-15, Mixed Under-7, Mixed Under-9, Boys Under-20, Girls Under-20 and 38-and-Above.

The 11th edition of the Thirsty Football Cup has drawn a total of 249 teams relatively smaller to last year’s 340 squads in three different venues. The organizers decided to limit the teams and to cut it down to one venue to make it a better-organized event.

The football festival has a total of 13 different divisions.

The Girls Under-15 division, Boys Under-20 and 38-and-Above categories have 10 teams each, and each division will be split into two groups that will be trimmed down to the top two teams. The top two squads will compete in the semifinals in a knockout match and the winners will advance to compete for the crown.

The Girls Under-20 and the Mixed Under-7 have five teams each. Both age groups will use the league type format and the team with the most wins will be crowned as the winner.

Only two groups in the Mixed Under-9, Group 5 and Group 6, will be playing today. The division has a total of 22 teams and is divided into six groups.

Matches in the Mixed Under-7, Mixed Under-9, Boys Under-20 and Girls Under-15 kicks off at 5:30 this afternoon. The 38-and-Above category starts at 9:10 p.m. followed by the Girls Under-20 division at 9:30 p.m..

Tomorrow the rest of the Mixed Under-9 matches will be played along with Mixed Under-11, Girls Under-18 and Boys Under-15 divisions.

The Boys Under-13, Boys Under-18, Ladies Open and Mens Open will be on the final day on Sunday.

A total of 19 out-of-town teams are seeing action in the tournament, teams from San Carlos City, Dumaguete City, Davao City, Bohol, Manila, Leyte, Tacloban, Dipolog, Negros Occidental, Oroqueta City, Cagayan de Oro and Leyte. The annual football meet will also have its first international team from South Korea, which will play as Erco-Bro Koreans.
