Limpag: Dilemma: Go solid or get reinforcements-A A +A
Thursday, February 20, 2014
AFTER the end of the Cviraa, the next move in the step-ladder tournament is choosing who will make the Region 7 team in the Palarong Pambansa.
It’s a no-brainer for the individual events, as the gold medalists move on, but for the team events, there is always the question: Go solid, or get reinforcements?
And if you don’t pick up any reinforcements, does that mean you are selfish?
I don’t think so, but that’s not what DepEd thinks. Pess Cebu City coordinator Zenaida Gocotano said, “There are those who will only think about bringing their entire team when there are players from the losing team who could contribute to the bid. I hope the coaches will not be selfish.”
Picking up reinforcements means one thing--players who worked hard to get you to where you are will dropped in favor of players from teams who lost. So, by going solid, a coach is rewarding his own players for helping the team win the Cviraa title, not necessarily a sign of being selfish.
Besides, it takes time for players to jell well, especially if they come out of the cold to join a new team, which, just weeks ago, they were trying so hard to beat.
And consider, too, the limited time to train by the newly formed squad if you pluck out the best individual players from the losing teams. You can’t fashion out a well-jelled machine in just two weeks and without any games under your belt.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you just overlook a guy who can shoot a three with his eyes closed. If are really exceptional players whose skills would be a big boost, sign him up.
But if the reinforcements you are being told to get are but just a shade ahead of your substitutes skills? Well...
The champion team? Or a team of champions? The best guy to answer that is the coach himself. He knows what his team needs and he knows what it takes to win the Palaro. If he wants to go solid, let him be. He’s not being selfish.
Besides, what is selfish? A coach deciding to bring his whole team to the next level of competition or a coach who’s told to pick up this guy because his or her parents happen to know someone who knows someone else?
