THREE Filipino warriors will be seeing action in Top Rank’s Ring of Gold boxing event this weekend at the Cotai Arena in Macau.
Marvin Sonsona will be in one of the featured bouts against fellow former world champion Akifumi Shimoda for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) International featherweight crown.
After becoming a world champion in 2009, Sonsona has had some troubles in and out of the ring. He has fought sparingly in the last four years, only once a year.
The 23-year-old Sonsona, who was projected as one of the fighters that would become a
future superstar, captured the vacant WBO super flyweight belt with a unanimous decision over Jose Lopez in Canada.
After that Sonsona’s career would spiral down, losing his title on the scales after coming in over weight in his first title defense against Alejandro Hernandez. He, however, would walk away with an unbeaten record after settling with a draw.
In 2010, Sonsona would suffer his first career defeat in the hands of a bigger Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in Puerto Rico for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title.
Sonsona jumped up two divisions and was knocked out by Vazquez Jr. in four rounds.
Following a long layoff, Sonsona would make his ring return late in 2011 and win over Carlos Jacobo by unanimous decision. He would beat Carlos Fulgencio via a fifth round knockout in 2012 and always tough Jason Egera by stoppage last year.
The 29-year-old Shimoda, on the other hand, has won five of his last six fights since losing his World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight belt to Rico Ramos via seventh round knockout in 2011.
Sonsona is 17-1-1 with 14 knockouts, while Shimoda is 28-3-2 with 12 knockouts.
The two other promising Filipinos warriors in the undercard are unbeaten Harmonito Dela Torre and Jerwin Ancajas.
Dela Torre (11-0, 6 KOs) takes on Indonesian Yakobus Heluka (7-5) in a 6-rounder, while Ancajas (18-1, 10 KOs) slugs it out with Thai Inthanon Sithchamuang (20-6, 11 KOs).
