Koreans win dawn shootout

THE first international team to ever join the Thirsty Football Cup, Erco Koreans, made an immediate impact in their debut in one of the biggest football festivals in the Philippines after being crowned the kings of the Men’s Open division yesterday at dawn.

Erco Koreans, who flew in last Thursday from South Korea to compete in the 11th Thirsty Football Cup, edged out Leylam-B, 4-3, in a penalty shootout at the Cebu City Sports Complex at 3:45 a.m.

Erco Koreans also competed in the Boys Under-20 category but were eliminated in the group stage.

Erco Koreans didn’t allow themselves to go home empty handed, making an impact in the group stage by ending up as the No. 1 seed in Group 2 with 10 points from a 3-1-0 win-draw-loss record.

Erco Koreans defeated Circle of Friends United 1-0 in the round-of-16 knockout stage, and ousted Don Bosco Alumni-B, 2-1, in the quarter finals. They got a finals seat after beating Warshockz, 1-0, in the semifinals.

Leylam-B finished at the top of Group 4 with 12 points on four wins.. Leylam-B beat Erco-A, 1-0 in the round-of-16 knockout stage and sister team Leylam C, 1-0, in the quarterfinals. They also eliminated Don Bosco Alumni-C, 2-0, in the semifinals.

Leylam FC didn’t go empty handed after winning the Boys Under-18 crown with a 1-0 victory over Abellana-A. Yves Caballero was named the division’s MVP.

Leylam FC-A finished the group stage as a second seed with five points from a 1-2-0 win-draw-loss slate. Leylam FC-A beat University of Cebu (UC) Erco, 3-1, in the round of 16 knockout phase and then beat Maria Montessori International School, 1-0, in the quarter finals before barging in into the finals with a 2-1 victory over Barili FC in the semi-final round.
