Sabillo to gamble crown vs. Mexican-A A +A

ALTHOUGH Merlito Sabillo is an unbeaten world champion, only a few have taken notice of his talent.
The tough 30-year-old slugger, however, gets a chance to once again show the world what he’s made of as he gambles his crown by fighting a Mexican in Mexico.
Sabillo is defending his World Boxing Organization (WBO) mini-flyweight belt in Mexico on March 22 against Mexican prospect Francisco Rodriguez in the main supporting bout of the Erik Morales’ ring return against Jorge Paez Jr. at the Arena Monterrey.
“Sabillo needs a career-defining fight that would establish him as a serious great world champion and winning again in enemy territory should give him more attention.
His fight with Buitrago would brought him more recognition but wasn’t as convincing as it should have been,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu.
Although the fight is official, ALA Promotions hasn’t signed the contract yet.
Sabillo, 23-0-1 with 12 knockouts, captured the interim WBO mini-flyweight belt last year in Colombia after an eighth round stoppage of Luis de la Rosa. He was crowned the regular champion after Moises Fuentes relinquished his crown after moving up in weight.
