BACOLOD CITY—The winds in Binitin literally blew away Cebu's chance for a title in the PAL Interclub.

Needing a last-minute push, Club Filipino faltered in the home stretch and lost the Sportswriters Division title in the windy Bacold Golf Course in Binitin. Leading by one going into the final day, Club Filipino settled for third place after closing with 83 to finish with 376 (101-98-96-83). Eagle Ridge soared to the top spot with 384 (101-85-108-92) and Lumbia, which lost the first- day lead to Club Filipino in the second round, got second place with 377 (109-84-98-86).

Jufil Sato had the best round with 24, but a pick- up in his last hole cost Club Filipino second place, while Raymond Garcia and Fernando Mondares had 21 each. Victor Yuvallos contributed 17, while Hector Almario's 11 wasn't counted.

Garcia started well, and had four pars in the first nine holes, but only had one and two pick-ups in his last nine holes.

“The wind picked up at 10 a.m. Though we were all playing under the same conditions, we are really not used to the wind,” said Garcia, who led the club with 26 points in the third day.

Garcia said pressure was also a factor as unlike last year when they had a sizable lead, they only led by one going into the final day.

“We were also monitoring their scores. if they got a par, we knew we also have to score a par to keep up,” he said.

Club Filipino was up by one over Eagle Ridge and by two over Lumbia going into the final round but finished training Eagle Ridge by eight points and Lumbia by a point.

“Well, we fell short. We would have wanted to win it all, but at leas t there's one Cebu team who will have a podium finish this year,” he said.

Eagle Ridge zoomed to the top with a 92 in the final day, thanks to the 25 of Raymund Bonquin. Dante Felrante and Ireneo Arbues had 23 each, while Angelito Sortijas had 21.
