CHAIRMAN Ed Hayco and the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) will support Arthur Craig “Iggy” Pantino in the boys 14-under age group in the ITF Asia 14-Under Development Championships 2014 on March 15-28 in Ho Chin Minh, Vietnam.

Pantino, 11, of the University of San Carlos Basic Education Department (USC-BED), will be joined by Zethley Mae Alferez of Bright Academy in the competition pitting Asia’s top players.

Hayco said they extended their help to Pantino because CCSC believes he can be a world-class athlete.

“We want to build him up as one of Cebu’s world-class athletes. We also got the assurance that Pantino will get deeply involved in the grassroots program, which is a prerequisite for our support. We want to support athletes who have the heart to share,” Hayco said.

Hayco added that the CCSC feels his victories would be more meaningful if Pantino shares his gift with the barangay kids.

“We need to keep identifying athletes and coaches who have world-class skills, the heart and the initiative to help out. These three things are factors that can make the difference in certain sports. If an athlete or coach is just content with winning gold themselves, it doesn’t have any rippling effect,” said Hayco.

Hayco also said if a coach or athlete, out of his heart and initiative, creates a movement for his sport, then they can believe the program can move a sports community forward.

“We have to identify who these people are,” said Hayco.

Lourdes, the mother of Pantino, said she is overwhelmed by the support of the CCSC after a disheartening experience with the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta).

Philta withdrew its support at the last minute for the top three junior netters who were set to compete in the world junior tennis competition pre-qualifying event last month and instead advised the players to shoulder the expenses because Philta didn’t get any funds from the Philippine Sports Commission for the trip.
