For safety, Kawasan Marathon trims down number of runners-A A +A
Thursday, March 6, 2014
ONLY a few slots are left for the third edition of the Kawasan Falls Marathon (KFM) set on March 23, which will start at the old Badian Chapel in Matutinao, Badian passing through the municipalities of Alegria and Malabuyoc and back to Badian.
Organizers are just 30 slots left for the 42K, 52 in the 21K and about 90 slots in the 12K distance run.
They are limiting the participants to 200 runners per category.
According to Run For Sight Foundation chairman Dr. Potenciano “Yong” Larazzabal III, they originally set 250 participants per category but because he noticed that the last kilometer towards the finish line near the falls is tight and the finish area can accommodate only a few people at a time, they decided to trim down the number of participants.
What is new this year is the “rope swing Kawasan plunge” where in the first 100 42K and 21K finishers, who will take the dare and swing from the rope, will receive a beach towel as an award.
Larazzabal also said that the mayors in the three municipalities have already pledged their support and will showcase their delicacies for the runners.
They will also send their fire trucks for those who want to drench themselves to cool down along the race route.
“There will be tanods along the route to secure the participants,” said Larazzabal, who just arrived from joining his 36th marathon in New Zealand, where he made a personal record.
About 80 percent of the route will have a scenic view and the runners will have a different experience compared with the city runs.
The registration fee is P700 for 12K, P900 for 21K and P1,100 for 42K run with registration centers at the Center for Sight and Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital and those interested can also register at the www.runforsight.net.
