I like what Sonny Barrios said.

“Let’s allow the Gilas Pilipinas to play in the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) Governor’s Cup,” Barrios said. “It will do our country proud. It is patriotism to the max.”

Barrios, the former PBA commissioner, is now executive director of the Samahang Basketbol sa Pilipinas (SBP), the country’s governing basketball body duly recognized by the Fiba (World Basketball Federation).

Chot Reyes, who coached Gilas Pilipinas to a historic runner-up finish in the Fiba Asia Cup in August 2013 that brought the country to the Fiba World Cup in Spain this August-September, is exceedingly warm to the idea.

“But, of course, I’d love to see that happen,” Reyes said. “We do not have many tournaments to toughen up our team bound for Spain and I would certainly welcome the chance for my boys to play in the PBA.”

Governor’s Cup, won last October by back-to-back Conference champion San Mig Coffee, will be the country’s third and last offering succeeding the recently-launched PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The chance for Gilas Pilipinas to play in the Governor’s Cup will mainly depend on the decision of the PBA Board of Governors.

It’d be a tough verdict since a go-signal would mean virtually that all the teams will suffer in the Governor’s Cup because their players are with Gilas Pilipinas.

A total of 17 PBA players are aspirants for inclusion to the Spain-bound Gilas Pilipinas crew.
And, just barely two weeks after the Spain campaign, Gilas Pilipinas is expected to fly to Incheon, South Korea, for the Asian Games.

What will happen should Gilas Pilipinas is to play in the Governor’s Cup is, the Nationals could be virtual shoo-ins to win the crown—although, initially, they are considered to be a guest team.

If ever, the primordial consideration for the Gilas quintet to see action in the Governor’s Cup is the national interest.

We might win one or a couple of games in Spain but then, the ultimate goal is to capture the Asian basketball gold.

The golden task in Korea will definitely be enhanced with the admission of Gilas in the next Conference.
