PREPARATIONS for the regular season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) schools are starting to lift off with a pocket tournament that will feature a final four team of the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

This competition, initiated by the Univesity of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, will be spread in four days and will be held in Lapu-Lapu and Danao City.

“We are finalizing our deals with Lapu-Lapu City Hoops Dome and Danao City Civic Center as our venues for the tournament. We can’t book the games at the Cebu Coliseum and the Mandaue City Sports Complex because they’re fully-booked with graduation ceremonies and other events,” USJ-R Athletic Moderator Jonathan Saso told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

The tournament will feature Cebu’s top universities—University of the Visayas Green Lancers, Southwestern University Cobras and the Jaguars along with the National University Bulldogs of the UAAP on March 24-27.

In the recently-concluded Cebu City Mayor’s Cup Sinulog tournament, USJ-R, which is parading a new import from the Republic of Congo Quintin Luzoladio, has proved to be a worthy opponent as they finished second to the Cobras, the runner-up of last year’s Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL).

Aside from having an additional African import, USJ-R also has local recruits, who are expected to make the team an even stronger title contender for this season.

SWU will also be paradomg ots mew recruits, who are expected to give more depth to its line-up.

UV, on the other hand, is still tinkering with its roster and will be a surprise this year as nobody from last year’s champion squad are insured of a slot to the next Cesafi regular season.

Meanwhile, NU coach Eric Altamirano is trying to get his team back to the UAAP final four. The tea will be playing without two-time UAAP MVP Bobby Ray Parks, who decided to leave the Bulldogs and try his game in the US.

Aside from Parks, NU also parted ways with shooting guard Mark Joel De Guzman, Cameroonian center Emmanuel Mba, Troy Rosario, Lee Dennice Villamor and Robin Roño.
