THREE Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) member schools get their chance to toughen up before the regular season in the 2014 FilOil Flying V Pre-Season Premier Cup on April 23 in San Juan Arena.
Cesafi defending champion University of the Visayas (UV), 2013 Philippine Collegiate Champions League runner-up Southwestern University (SWU) and Cesafi third placer University of San Carlos are among the 22 teams who are trying to get their teams ready for their respective leagues.
This year, another out-of-town team—the Holy Trinity College of Gen. Santos City—was also invited along with the Fiba World U-17 Championship-bound PH U17 team.
Absent in this year’s pre-season games are the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) Blue Eagles and the Arellano Univeristy (AU) Chiefs).
“It’s a good opportunity for our players to get the chance to play against the best schools in the country. It (FilOil tournament) is really needed since most of our players are new,” USC team manager and Bogo City Mayor Celestino “Junie” Martinez told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
USC is in Bracket B along with NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions, Letran Knights, FEU Tamaraws, Lyceum Pirates, Adamson University Falcons and RP U-17.
UV, meanwhile, is finalizing its trip and is looking for a sponsor.
“We’re still finalizing everything. We were invited but we are still waiting for the confirmation from our sponsors. We need to have sponsors because we will take care of all our expenses,” Green Lancers liaison officer Marichu Cabanilla said.
UV is with UAAP champions La Salle Green Archers, UST Growling Tigers, Perpetual Help Altas, UE Red Warriors, JRU Heavy Bombers and Mapua Cardinals in Group A.
SWU Athletic director Ryan Aznar, on the other hand, confirmed their participation in the pre-season event.
“We are invited, so we are going. It would be insulting if we will turn down an invitation like that. Definitely we will join,” Aznar said.
