ROMMEL Pepito and Relan Taneo thrashed Owen Belen and Junkie Mendoza, 21-9, 21-16 in the fourth round of the Philippine Sports Commission/Cebu City Sports Commission Olympic Development Beach Volleyball Series at the Fort San Pedro sand court in Plaza Independencia.
The tournament is organized to identify players for a series of Olympic qualifiers next year and to select four players who will represent Cebu in the Philippine National Games (PNG) this May.
The fourth-round winners were a surprise for PSC beach volleyball consultant Eric LeCain because none of them secured any of the four slots in the last three legs.
“None of these players were ranked in the top four, but they worked hard all day and clawed their way to the finals,” said LeCain, who added the duo’s victory will improve their rankings.
“They have been coming to the training sessions at the PSC court and that shows they are serious about winning and that the program of CCSC is working. We have new players such as Junkie Mendoza joining the tournament and the popularity of the program is growing,” said LeCain.
In the last round, some of the higher-ranking teams like Edmar Bonono and Edward Ybañez decided to split up and play with different younger players.
