THE University of San Carlos rode on the back of the hardworking Republic of Congo center Tuyambe Espoir to score an upset over the highly favored University of the Visayas Green Lancers following a 70-65 victory in the opening game of the Cebu City Mayor’s Cup Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament 2014 at the Cebu Coliseum last night.
It was a frustrating loss for the 10-time Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champions Green Lancers, who had the win within arm’s reach when Espoir spoiled it all by scoring 10 of the Warriors final 13 points.
Today, the Warriors will try to bring its upbeat game against the taller and bigger National Collegiate Athletic Association four-time champions San Beda College Red Lions in the main game at 7 p.m., while UV will try to rebound from the loss when they play the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars in the opening match at 4:30 p.m.
As of press time, USJ-R was playing the Red Lions.
The Cebu City Sports Commission on the other hand will be introducing the women’s basketball with the preliminary game between the Cebu City and the Mandaue City teams.
Meanwhile, Mayor Michael Rama fired 13 triples of the game high 47 points to lead Team Rama to a 100-94 win over City Bogo, which had Cebu Province ABC Federation President Tining Martinez scoring 14 points.
USC’s massive build-up was apparent with the acquisition of Espoir and Cameroonian center Kataq Ibrahim and a bunch of reliable local players that include John Agustin Pajantoy.
The game had seven lead changes and six deadlocks before USC took control of the game with a wicked 8-0 run that turned a 21-25 deficit to a 29-25 lead.
USC protected the lead and at one point they were up by nine points, 48-39 before UV regained composure to score the last six points of the third period.
UV regained the lead with Jean-Marie Mpouma’s split charity, 56-55 still with 6:05 left to play and went to take over the control of the game until the final three minutes of the game.
It was when Espoir spoiled UV’s hunt for the win when he scored 10 points including a triple at the 1:45 mark that broke the backs of the Lancers.
Espoir scored the game high 16 points, while Charles Pepito added 12 for USC.
