MICHAEL Farenas’ title dreams are still alive after a stoppage win over veteran journeyman and former Manny Pacquiao foe Hector Velazquez last Friday night at the Fil Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The fight was stopped in the second round after the 39-year-old Velazquez suffered a cut on the head.
The fight was stopped and Farenas was awarded with the technical knockout win because the cut was ruled as coming from a punch.
Farenas, rated No. 10 in the International Boxing Federation (IBF), improved to 38-4-4 with 30 knockouts, while Velazquez dropped to 56-
21-3 with 38 knockouts.
On the other hand, Cebuano Dave Peñalosa (8-0, 5 KOs), the son of
two-division world champion Dodie Boy Peñalosa, walked away with a unanimous decision over Mexican Alem Robles (6-5-2, 2 KOs) in the main supporting bout.
All three judges saw Dave winning the sixround fight with scores of 58-56, 59-56 and 58-56.
Meanwhile in Gen. Santos last Thursday night, Omega Boxing Gym mainstay Jason Canoy (18-4-2, 12 KOs) beat journeyman Ronrex Dalut by unanimous decision, while teammate Jordan Catubay (6-2-1, 3 KOs) scored a second round knockout over Rowel Garcia (5-13-2, 1 KO). (EKA)
