USJ-R rookies show mettle in beach volley

ROOKIES Niño Allistar Gairanod and Jai-jai Verbocidad of the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) thrashed University of Southern Philippines Foundation’s (USPF) John Michael Ylanan and Left John Tormis, 21-12 in Pool B yesterday in the last leg of the Philippine Sports Commission/Cebu City Sports Commission Olympic Development Beach Volleyball Series at the Fort San Pedro Sand court in Plaza Independencia.

Gairanod, 20, ended the match with a smash to collect their second win in the series that will identify the players who will represent Cebu in the Philippine National Games and represent the country in a series of Olympic qualifiers.

“Playing beach volleyball is very hard compared to playing indoor volleyball. It takes a lot of discipline to be able to improve in this kind of game, “ said Gairanod, who ranked ninth in the over-all standing.

Verbocidad,17, from Dumaguete City said he finds the sport very challenging because versatility is needed.

“Diri ka birahon sa sand, it’s very tough playing beach volleyball and for us to succeed, we need a lot of teamwork,” said Verbocidad, who is ranked No. 8.

The UJSR rookies first won against the Jade Becaldo and Mark Anthony Fernandez of University of the Visayas (UV), 21-18. Gairanod and Verbocidad have a 2-1 record, while Ylanan and Tormis have a 1-2 mark.

Pool B is currently led by Tippy Tipgos and Jonrey Sasing, who are 2-0.

In Pool A, USPF’s Edmar Bonono and Edward Ybañez took the lead with a 2-0 after routing Owen Belen and Jade Illut, 21-11, and Jason Gabales and Ramiil Pepito, 21-10.

Belen and Illut are second with a 2-1 mark, while Southwestern University’s (SWU) Rommel Pepito and Relan Taneo split their two games. Gabales and Pepito are last with an 0-3 record.

The games will resume at 8 a.m. today.
