HUNAT Sugbo of Parklane International Hotel looks to redeem its reputation in the triathlon community as it hosts the Tri-Bantayan on May 3 at Baigad Bantayan, Bantayan Island.

Hunat Sugbo found itself in hot waters last October in its first triathlon hosting in Oslob, when the technical arm they tapped released different sets of winners. This forced Hunat Sugbo to award different sets of winners.

Over-all coordinator Cenelyn Manguilimotan said they have learned from that experience and this time, they are making sure that the race will be smooth-sailing.

“That experience taught us a lot about handling a triathlon. That time, we relied solely on our race director. This time, we are hands on with the preparation,” she told reports during the press conference at Parklane Hotel in Cebu City yesterday.

In fact Manguilimotan said they have checked the race course to make sure it is the right distance not once, not twice but four times.

TriBantayan is organized to help raise funds for the rehabilitation of the island. The proceeds will go to fishermen of Bantayan in building or repairing fishing boats.

Bantayan was among those heavily affected by Typhoon Yolanda late last year.

The Oslob triathlon drew 426 participants. This event, however, organizers are expecting half of that number merely because it’s a fun and event for a cause.

The event course is made not for competition but also for fun. It is also designed to encourage new triathletes to join and have fun.

“This is not a hardcore triathlon race, we’re doing it for fun. There will be no cash prizes. We are doing this more to help Bantayan,” Manguilimotan said.

The event makes sure that there will be no technical lapses in each discipline and they have created a separate group monitoring for run, swim and bike.

“I went to Bantayan three times to visit venue and the route. We have the full cooperation of the mayor of (Bantayan) for the safety of participants,” said race coordinator Joel Baring “Hopefully, we can deliver what Parklane expects from us.”

Buses of Parklane and the Provincial government will pick up participants from Parklane to Jagnaya port. From there, participants can ride a boat to Bantayan Island.

TriBantayan will have a 1K swim, 30K bike and 7Krun. The categories are solo, relay-all male and relay mix.

The registration started last Feb. 24. Early bird promo of P1,500 is accepted until today. The regular registration is P1,800. Racers will her an event t-shirt, finisher’s medal, race bib, loot bag, swim cap, helmet and bike number stickers, pre-race light meal and post-race meal.

Although no cash prize will be given, special awards, medals amd trophies will still be given.

Meanwhile, the fourth edition of Hunat Sugbo is set to on June 22 at ParkMall, Mandaue City. This time, the run will give all the proceeds for the medical and surgical missions. The categories will be the usual 12K and 21K run.

Hunat Sugbo Triathlon, on the other hand, will go to Argao on Sept. 21. The organizers said these events are part of Parklane’s advocacy to promote a healthy lifestyle and Cebu’s tourism.
