CEBUANOS Jade Becaldo and Edward Ybañez survived Hong Kong, 21-13, 18-21, 16-14 for their first win in the 5th Khanom-Chang AVC Beach Tour-Khanom Open in, Thailand.

Becaldo and Ybañez, who are representing the Philippines, said this is their first international tournament together and just their second stint since winning the 2010 Private Schools Athletic Association national title.

“We had a good game against Hong Kong. We were able to give each other a good set to execute a perfect attack. Even though this is our first international tournament together, we were able to adjust to each other. Our defense is also good. However, we are not satisfied with our performance because we are still adjusting to the heat and the depth of the sand court,” said Becaldo.

Becaldo plays for the University of the Visayas (UV), the team that won back-to-back titles in the Nestea Beach Volleyball national finals. Becaldo and Ybañez are bracketed together with China 1, Thailand 3, Vietnam and Hong Kong. A total of 84 teams joined the event and were divided into eight pools.

“The experience is really good but we feel like dwarves in this tournament. There are a lot of tall players here. Still, we hope that we can get one of the top two spots in our bracket to be able to advance to the next level and earn more points,” said Becaldo.

Becaldo said that they need points to be among the 16 seeded teams in the Asian Games in South Korea this September.

The team was set to face Vietnam late yesterday afternoon.

“Solid ang Vietnam pero makaya ra ug pildi if we commit less errors and if we will be able to adjust to the sand court. Unlike the other players here na gi yano-yano ra nila ang kalawom sa sand court,” said Becaldo.
