CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama met local stakeholders last Wednesday and said he wants the sports programs of the City to be long-term and sustainable.

Mayor Rama met with selected sports luminaries for a focused group discussion on “sports as a means for nation building.”

“(It) was a select group who were hand-picked by the mayor.

He spent the entire afternoon with us. We itemized all the resources that the sports community can tap,” said Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Ed Hayco. “Our exercise and objective were how to integrate the resources, develop a sustaining sports program and institutionalize these programs.”

Aside from Hayco, the Cebu City Sports Commission commissioners Michael John Sy, Dr. Rhoel Dejaño, Bernard Ricablanca, Zenaida Gocotano, Dr. Danny Villadolid, executive director Mark Aliño, former Sambag I barangay captain Jerry Guardo, sports columnists John Pages and Nimrod Quiñones, weightlifting coach Calixto Pacquiao, volleyball coach Eric LeCain, and Cebu City Sports Complex manager Ricky Ballesteros joined the meeting.

Hayco said that Rama, who is also a sportsman, understands the needs of the sports community.

“It was a long-term vision that the mayor wants the group to focus on. It was a synergy of resources that could provide a solution to the many questions with regards to our sports programs and resources in the city,” Hayco said.

Mayor Rama believes sports is the best tool for nation building as it provides every athlete with the correct work ethic, attitude and discipline.

Once the focused group will come up with the framework, it would be implemented through the Cebu City Sports Commission and the Department of Education in Cebu City.
