Cviraa athletes arrive in Laguna for Palaro-A A +A

THE Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) delegation arrived in Laguna last Tuesday for this year’s 2014 Palarong Pambansa.
The national sporting conclave is considered the biggest sporting event in the country with over 10,000 student-athletes coming from 17 regions converging for the top honors.
It will officially open on May 4 and will run until May 10.
Cviraa, which ranked third over-all in the 2013 edition, arrived a few days before the opening date to get acquainted with the playing venue and to get settled in at the Unson Elementary and National High School in Laguna.
Department of Education Cebu City Division sports coordinator Zenaida Gocotano said the playing venues are far from where they are being billeted.
“We came in a few days early to be able to train in the playing venues,” said Gocotano.
Gocotano added the Cviraa delegation is composed of 443 athletes with 119 coaches, assistant coaches, trainers and chaperons. There are about 183 delegation officials, coordinators, and officiating official.
The Palarong Pambansa will be using the medal tally this year as opposed to the point system that was used in the past years.
Last year, Cviraa finally climbed out from being perennial fourth placers and made it to third place.
DepEd sports consultant Ricky Ballesteros, hopes that all the Cviraa athletes will give their best and hopefully improve their third place finish last year.
“With the present medall tally, I hope that the medal-rich athletics and swimming events will deliver more golds to the region. And good luck to the athletes,’ said Ballesteros.
