‘Lost at the scales’-A A +A

AFTER winning the title in a fight that ended in a free-for-all, IBF light flyweight champion Johnreil Casimero is going to lose it without even throwing a punch.
Casimero won’t have a chance to defend his belt tonight after weighing in at 5 ½ pounds over the light flyweight limit. He tipped the scales two divisions higher at 113.5 pounds, while Colombian challenger Mauricio Fuentes hit the light flyweight limit of 108 pounds in yesterday’s weigh-in at the SM City Cebu Food Court.
The Casimero vs. Fuentes bout tonight at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino is still a go with the former champion forced to wear heavier gloves. The title will be declared vacant if Casimero wins.
“Casimero tried. He did everything to make weight but he really just outgrew the weight division. He will be moving up in weight,” said his trainer Christopher Tepora.
The 24-year-old Casimero was way over the limit he didn’t even bother to lose the excess baggage.
“I will do everything for the fans. I had a good preparation but I just couldn’t make weight. My mind says I can do it but by my body says no,” said Casimero. “I’m worried (about losing the title) because I worked hard for it, winning it in Argentina where we were mauled. I’m really sorry for this.”
Casimero’s manager and promoter Sammy Gello-ani feels that Casimero has already outgrown the light flyweight division and although his ward lost his title, he will be giving him another title shot at a higher division.
“We are very proud of him for representing the country and the entire Filipino people.
He still wants it (make weight) but physically he can’t do it,” said Gello-ani. “Sad to say he lost it at the scales. But I promise that I will bring Casimero to a higher weight division and try to get another title for Casimero there.”
Casimero, who will be moving up to flyweight in his next fight, is 19-2 with 11 knockouts, while Fuentes is 16-2 with 10 knockouts.
Fuentes believes that cutting down in weight will take its toll on Casimero on fight night.
“It’s my first time here. But I know Casimero is already weak that’s why he is going to lose,” said Fuentes.
