PSC expects 5,000 athletes in PNG

MANILA—More than 5,000 athletes, including members of the national teams, will compete in sports in the 2014 Philippine Sports Commission-Philippine Olympic Committee (PSC-POC) National Games set this Friday at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

PSC chairman Richie Garcia said yesterday that they expecting more participants in the fourth edition of the revived annual competition, which gathered mostly province-based athletes last year.

“We expect an even bigger PNG this year than the previous ones. We encourage all aspiring athletes to participate and compete against members of the national team,” said Garcia, who set aside some P20 million for the PNG.

He said that the 10-day competition is compulsory to all members of the national team especially those who are in the priority lists. And if anyone of them lose, Garcia said they will downgrade their monthly stipend from the PSC.

Four Filipino-Americans have confirmed their participation, while athletes from Singapore are also seeing action in the games, which is an open competition.

Among the sports to be contested are archery, arnis, weighlifting, pencak silat and wrestling , athletics, fencing, karatedo, sepak takraw, badminton, baseball, boxing, diving, gymnastics, lawn tennis, muay thai, soft tennis, swimming, taekwondo, underwater hockey and volleyball.

The PNG will also have 3-on-3 basketball, boccia, goalboal, powerlifting, bowling, bridge, cheerdance, chess, judo, canoe, kayak, dragon boat, women’s futsal, golf, motocross, rugby, sailing, table tennis, windsurfing and wushu.
