Diongson wins athletics gold in PNG

CLAIR Diongson pushed Cebu into the winners’ circle of the athletics competition of the 2014 Philippine Sports Commission-Philippine Olympic Committee (PSC-POC) National Games after winning the 10,000-meter walk of the juniors division yesterday at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.

Meanwhile, the Cebu underwater hockey squad won the bronze medal after crushing Manila, while Cebu’s Jean Jacque Antigua, John Martin Galinato, Deniezelle Scott Aying and Kent John Malazarte also won a silver in the 3-on-3 basketball competition after losing to San Juan.

Diongson took the title after clocking 1 hour, 4:14 minutes to overpower Joseph Oliver Cellona of the University of the Philippines and John Lloyd Lamaclamac of the University of Sto. Tomas.

Ma. Elizabeth Capioso of UP, Jona Victoriano of San Pedro Poveda and Annabelle Reyes of Dasmarinas finished in the Top 3 of the women’s juniors 10,000-m walk.

UST’s Dave Gumacal and Vilma Santa Ana shone brightly as they dominated the athletics’ men and women’s 10,000-m walk respectively.

Gumacal timed 54:49.2 seconds to win the men’s gold, while teammate Santa Ana posted 1:06:26.3 in the women’s side for a surprising dominance by the España-based Growling Tigers.

Edgar Bardel of Team Titus-Pasay claimed the silver with 56:37.6 while Rex Reyes settled for the bronze with 59:04.8. In the women’s side, Jenelyn Surdilla brought home the silver with 1:07:03.8, while May Allaine Tagalog of Rizal Technological University won the bronze medal.

Angel Carino of Dasmariñas City showed a lot of promise after bagging the gold in the women’s juniors long jump with a leap of 5.25-m.

Aldee Faith Denuyo of UST was second with 4.97m. while Rosemarie Olorvida of LSA-Smart was third with 4.93m.

Tito Carpio scored 562 points to win the gold in the men’s shooting air rifle 10m, while Shanin Gonzales finished with 372 to grab the women’s 10m air rifle gold also yesterday at the Fort Bonifacio Range in Muntinlupa City.
