SURPRISE WINNER. Wesley So (6.5) was the surprise winner by a full point in the just concluded Raul Capablanca Memorial that was participated by elite players Vasilly Ivanchuk Ukraine (4), Lenier Perez Dominguez (5) and Lazaro Bruzon (5.5) of Cuba, Zoltan Almasi (4.5) of Hungary and Francisco Vallejo (4.5) of Spain. The tournament was a category 19 with an average Elo of 2721.

The tournament should have followed the Bilbao Rule, meaning no draws should be allowed before 40 moves or upon decision by the arbiter. As it was, there were 22 draws out of 30 games and out of the eight wins three were by Wesley.

So’s strong showing against former winners of this tournament increased his Elo live rating to 2744 points, which is 15th highest in the world. His personal target is to join the top 10 this year and he can do so in the coming 41st Olympiad in Tromso, Norway this Augus. He will be joined by Oliver Barbosa and Catalino Sadorra. The other three members have not been named yet although it should be Eugene Torre for his 22nd Olympiad, the most by any player in the world.

Wesley is also the youngest player in history to have a rating over 2600 and is the eighth youngest GM ever.

Retired ship captain Rey Flores won the Cepca May tournament last Sunday at Handuraw Gorordo with five straight wins.

New member Eduard dela Torre made an impact in the club by placing solo second in just his first tournament, while auditor Ruel Hortelano also had a personal best for
third.

There was some adjustment in the prizes as there were also prizes for the top 5. Four players were tied at 4th -7th namely lady member Therese dela Torre, Jojo Muralla, Peterson Sia and Amado Olea.
