UAAP champions De La Salle University Green Archers stalled Southwestern University Cobras’ entry to the quarterfinal round after scoring a masterful 64-59 win in the FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup 2014 at the Lapu-Lapu City Hoops Dome last night.

The victory improved DSLU’s win-loss record to 3-1 and ended the four-game winning streak of the Cobras, who still hold the lead in Group A with 4-1 record.

SWU could seal its entry to the quarterfinal round as it plays its final elimination round game today against the University of the East Red Warriors at 3 p.m. La Salle is eyeing to sweep its Cebu Leg assignment against the University of San Carlos Warriors at 1 p.m. game today still at the Hoops Dome.

Two hours earlier, UE ended the misery of the 10-time Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. champion University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 82-69 win. UE, the tournament’s defending champions improved to 3-2 while UV exited with 0-6 card.

The Green Lancers were nowhere near their finest performance when they gave the Green Archers some scare before bowing, 61-56, last Friday evening at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

SWU, which came into the game carrying an undefeated 4-0 record had a good start, giving their PCCL finals tormentor some scare on its way to build a 7-point lead at the four-minute mark of the first period.

Despite La Salle’s 9-1 rally in the second period, SWU was able to keep the lead with Landry Sanjo and Daryl Goloran lighting up their scoreboard for a 31-28 lead at the half.

The game was evenly fought in the third period with the lead changing three times, but after a 40-all start of the final frame, the Green Archers slowly displayed their dominance with Terrence Mustre and Almond Vosotros sinking one triple each to help DLSU wither the hard-fighting Cobras.

Vosotros topscored for La Salle with 16 and Jeron Teng added 12 for DLSU. Sanjo topscored for SWU with 16 and Mac-Mac Tallo and Goloran contributed 11 points.

UV meanwhile, lost grip of the game after allowing UE to score an 11-0 run in the last 2:52 of the first quarter for a 26-12 Red Warriors lead. (RCM)
