TEAM Polygon of Indonesia, led by Southeast Asian Games (SEAGames) medalist Bandi Sugito, enlisted in the first leg of the 2014 Asean MTB Cup on June 13 to 15 in Danao City.

Sugito, the nemesis of MTB national team member Niño Surban, registered along with Indonesian teammate Chandra Rafsnazani in the cross-country elite.

The other teammates, like Yavento Pranata and Hildan Katana, will power their biking prowess in the elite downhill category. These two formidable riders have competed in several UCI World Cup races.

Malaysian DH elites like Daniel Frisco and Jalip Stanly are also expected to see action in the 2-kilometer downhill elite division.

Singapore is sending a top rider Herman Mann, who will join the downhill category.
Women’s

In the women’s division, Indonesian elite rider Kusmawati Yazid and Wilhelmina will be racing alongside Malaysian elites in Natasha Soon and Queenelisi Ligadu.

Singapore’s top rider Laura Liong will race with those elites in the women’s cross-country race.

The Philippines, on the other hand, will banner the top Filipino elite riders who won medals in the recently concluded Philippines National Games (PNG) last May 18 in Tagaytay City. National team member Niño Surban, who bagged the elite division’s gold medal in PNG and recently placed ninth overall in the Yawatahama race last weekend in Japan, will carry the country’s pride as he faces national team cyclists from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Meanwhile, in the Yawatahama race in Japan, Surban clocked 1 hour 50 minutes and 1 second to gain ninth place in the renowned elite MTB race.

Surban earlier said he will try to improve his race time in the event, and he did just that and catapulted from 20th place last year to ninth this year.

Mier

Cebuano mountain biker and SEAGames silver medalist John Mier, who recently snatched silver medal in the U23 division of this year’s PNG, will likely join Surban in the Asean MTB elite category.

Eusebio Quinones, a former national team member and current women’s national team coach, will arrive in Danao City on June 5 to familiarize the cross-country course in
Barangay Manlayag Patag, Danao City.

To help local riders prepare for this big event, a second MTB dry run—2nd Pre-Asean MTB Cup—is set on June 8 with a cross-country race, which starts at 8 a.m. There is also a downhill race set at 2 p.m.

There will be no registration fee for those who have pre-registered in the Asean MTB Cup Leg One on June 13 to 15.

A bus will be stationed in Danao City Boardwalk at 7 a.m. to bring riders and spectators to the racetrack.
