LAPU-LAPU City Mayor Paz Radaza yesterday promised to give cash to local athletes who won medals in the recent Philippine National Games (PNG).
The City’s delegation got 12 medals during the competition held in Metro Manila from May 19 to 25.
It was the City’s first time to send athletes to the PNG, which the Philippine Sports Commission revived in 2011.
Radaza, who presented nine successful athletes in her regular news conference, said the athletes will also be given plaques.
She said the amount the athletes will receive will depend on the City’s available
“The City is proud of you,” she told the athletes, who excelled in arnis and steeple chase or athletics.
One athlete won a gold medal, six got silver medals, and five won bronze medals.
Jonel Pepito, who won gold medal in the heavyweight division for arnis, said it was not easy winning over more than 400 arnis athletes.
“This year’s competition was harder because there were more athletes who joined,” said Pepito, who teaches at the Pajo National High School.
He thanked Radaza for giving them financial support.
The City shouldered the transportation and meals of more than 30 athletes.
With the City’s vision to turn Lapu-Lapu into a sports tourism hub, Radaza has announced that sports training facilities will be established at the Hoopdsome in Barangay Gun-ob.
The City is constructing a P2.5-million skate park inside the Hoopsdome compound.
