TOP seed International Master Kim Steven Yap scored two victories at the start of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca)-organized Mayor Mike Rama Chess Cup 2014 at the SM Event Center yesterday.

Yap pulled an easy win over Juspher Deligro in Round 1 then ripped Roland Arnado apart after 14 moves using a Petroff opening in the second round.

Aside from Yap, another top notch player IM Barlo Nadera, the No. 2 seed, also pulled off an easy first round win over Diomedes Diano.

Yap and Nadera are the 164 players, including 52 Kiddies and 18 Ladies players, who signed up hoping to get a share of the P75,000 total cash prizes.

As of press time yesterday, Nadera was playing John Francis Balbona.

Tournament chief arbiter FA Marvin Ruelan announced that instead of a 7-Round Swiss System formatm the competition was upgraded to a 9-Round format to conform with the number of participants of this NCFP-rated tournament.

During the opening ceremony, Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Edward Hayco challenged Cepca and the chess community to continue the spirit of the Guinness World Record breaking tournament held in 2011.

“You should capitalize on the 8,000 chess sets that the sports commission distributed to the schools in the city. The program would also uplift those in the baranggays, who could not afford to join tournaments,” Hayco said.

CCSC is co-sponsoring the event together with the Cebu City government JJ & J Construction and General Supply and Ace Technical Creations Inc.

Aside from Hayco, Atty. Tara Rama, who was representing the mayor, was the other guest of honor yesterday.

Aside from the two Cebuano IMs, the other top players in the tournament are Eden Diano, Glicerio Pardillo, NM Merben Roque, Rommel Ganzon, Ronald Ganzon, Edsel Montoya, Fide Master Anthony Makinano, Allan Cantonjos, NM Rogelio Enriquez Jr, Carlos Moreno III. All of them won their respective assignments.
