DONNIE Nietes is a huge inspiration to a lot of people but he has inspired the most his younger teammates, to strive hard and be the best in their profession.
For young up-and-coming fighters Melvin Gumban (16-0, 8 KOs) and Juren Labordo (11-1, 7 KOs) being around one of the best light flyweight in the world has turned them into better fighters.
“I’m happy to get the opportunity to spar with a world champion like Donnie. It is not every day that you get an opportunity like that. Sparring with him makes me a better fighter,” said the 23-year-old Gumban, who was one of Nietes’ sparring partners in his preparation for his rematch with Moises Fuentes earlier this month.
Tonight, it is Gumban’s turn to showcase his talent as he takes on veteran Jason Egera (21-10, 10 KOs) in the main event of “Cobra Tunay na Lakas Boxing” at the Mandaue Plaza Square in Mandaue City.
Gumban is treating this fight as one of his hardest but he is unfazed by Egera even though the latter has fought some world class boxers like former world champion Marvin Sonsona and ex-world title contender Michael Farenas.
“Jason Egera is a dangerous fighter. It will be a tough fight for Melvin. It will be a test if he is ready for the next level,” said his trainer Peter Cuizon.
Labordo wants to follow the footsteps of his fellow Negrense, Nietes. However, he has still a lot to prove and must hurdle his latest assignment JP Macadumpis (9-2-1, 3 KOs) in the main supporting bout.
