Carbonera slips past Pagnanawon in SRP MTB race-A A +A

ROY Carbonera topped the mountain bike race of the two-day cycling event—1st Sugbo Seawall Side Bicycle Oval race—presented by Sugbo Bikers and Cebu City yesterday at the South Road Properties (SRP).
Carbonera clocked 1 hour 26 minutes and 10 seconds to finish the 42-kilometer race first.
The riders navigated a2.8-kilometer lap 15 times around the SRP.
It was a close race to the finish between Carbonera and second placer Jaybop Pagnanawon, who was just milliseconds behind Carbonera. Roy’s older brother Randy came third in 1:27:45.
“Me and Jaybop broke away from the pack in the eighth lap. He was leading until I was able to gain momentum in the last lap sa kurbada ilawom sa tulay,” younger Carbonera told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
In Category B, Amon Espinoza crossed the finish line in 1:26:10 to win over Christian Caboñeta who came second.
Nilo Barbalose, who had a huge lead early on the race, was caught in the final two laps and dropped to third place.
The Category C title was won by Wendell Abastillas with Joseph Casipong and Dadong Carcueva taking second and third places, respectively.
Jun Doron and Jonas Ponsica placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
The top three in Open and Category B pocketed P5,000, P3,000 and P2,000, while the top five in category C received P5,000, P3,000, P2,000 P1,000 and P500.
“We decided to award the top three in open and Category B because we only had few bikers, while category C had a lot of participants,” Sugbo Bikers President Alberto Rabasol told Sun.Star Cebu.
According to Rabasol The group’s first race outcome was successful, and riders enjoyed the race route especially the muddy track under the bridge.
The event will be capped with a road bike race today.
About 150 are expected to join in the open category, Category B, Category C, and the special golden category for the 50 years old and above.
The top three in every category will also receive cash prizes. On-site registration will be accepted before the race starts at 8 a.m. (RSC)
