TEAM Cebu City is gearing up for the biggest taekwondo tournament in the Philippines next month in Manila.

“We are in the thick of preparations for the National Championship in both poomsae and sparring. We will be sending a big delegation numbering around 50,” Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) Region 7 chairman Tony del Prado told Sun.Star Cebu.

The National Taekwondo Championships is set to take place at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila, where the poomsae tournament will be on July 19 and 20 and the sparring set on July 26 and 27.

Del Prado is still optimistic about Team Cebu City’s chances despite losing some key players in the regular squad this year.

“We expect some improvement from our sparring team as we have two national team members this year. As for poomsae, we are cautiously optimistic. Though coach (Glenn Lava) has just come back from a month long intensive training with the national team under a visiting Korean coach, we have lost two players to UAAP schools, while a third mainstay has opted to rest from active competition. All were former international medalists,” he said.

With just over a month left before the tournament, Team Cebu City put their training up a notch and will be ready by next month.
