XTERRA pro Joseph Miller has fully recovered from the bruised ribs he suffered in a race last May.

Miller started his full training program this week in preparation for big races, especially the 2014 Xterra World Championships slated on Oct. 23 to 27 in Maui, Hawaii.

The Cebuano triathlete made history this year as the first Filipino to turn pro in Xterra. Although he struggled in the inaugural race, he bounced back and snatched seventh place in Xterra Malaysia last May. Days after that, he was checked for the bruises on his ribs.

“I had a light training since May and I just started my full program this week," Miller told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

As the only Filipino pro, Miller is likely tasked to carry the country's pride in the coming World Championships, which will have a 1.5-kilometer ocean swim, 30K mountain bike and 10K trail run.

“I will be going with Team Pilipinas, who I think would send 30 triathletes for the age group,” shared Miller.

Preparation

As the world championships come close, Miller takes one competition at a time as his preparation.

Before this, he first eyes the challenges of the Century Tuna 5150 Triathlon on June 29 in Subic Bay.

Miller, last year's champion in the 30-34 age group, will now race in the Filipino elite division.

“I think I can give my 70 percent this Sunday. So far, so good, my injury is fading.

Back to training nako karon maski ulahi I'm trying to catch up,” said Miller.

Cebuano John Philip Dueñas, who bagged the fastest run split award after clocking 24 minutes in last year's Century Tuna Triathlon, will race alongside Miller in the Filipino elite category.

Other Cebuanos who are also competing this Sunday are Noy Jopson in the 35-39 age group, and Jose Merdino Lim in the 30-34 age group.

After the race, the local and foreign triathletes will gear up for the much awaited Cobra Ironman 70.3 on Aug. 3 in Cebu. (RSC)
