DIGOS CITY — Team Cebu City boxers advanced to the next round of the 2014 PLDT-ABAP National Amateur Boxing Championships following their respective wins yesterday at the Digos City Stadium here.

Philippine National Games golden boy Junriel Jimenez was the classiest of them all as he scored a quick TKO-injury win over Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat’s Reymark Jay Ibones with 1:43 left in the second round of the Youth Boys Flyweight (52kgs) Division.

Jimenez’s dominance started with a right straight that smacked Ibones in the face midway in the opening round. The Sultan Kudarat fighter turned to survival mode, until the time of the stoppage.

“I also had hard time because he (Ibones) was a busy puncher. My only advantage was that I had a better strategy. I was lucky that I was not hit hard that’s why I did not really feel his punches,” Jimenez told Sun.Star Cebu in Cebuano.

Another hard right on the first minute in the second round forced referee Rolando Jose to pause the fight to check on Ibones’s bleeding nose and at about 20 seconds later, the fight was completely stopped behind the ring doctor’s recommendation.

“This would be a very tough assignment for me because I am a little underweight in this category. I was supposed to fight in the Light Flyweight category but I had to give way to my teammate Marvin Pomar who is fighting in that category,” Jimenez added.

Youth Boys Bantamweight (56kgs) fighter Jorge Edusma also neutralized the taller Cagayan de Oro City fighter Marvin Esquierdo with counterpunches and aggressiveness to score a unanimous decision victory.

“Nahutdan ko og hangin. Maayo na lang kay nabinlan pa gamay. Ni focus lang ko og maayo aron akong makita ang iyang kumo. I will try my very best to win every bout,” Edusma said.

With Esquierdo enjoying reach advantage, Edusma fought hard to close the distance and tried to telepath the opponent’s every punches.

He was succesful in almost all cases before Esquierdo regrouped and attacked the body of Edusma. However, his strategy did not last long as Edusma was determined to win the match.

Earlier, Kit Ceron Garces scored a repeat, this time eliminating Giovanne Argate from contention after a unanimous decision win in the Jr.Boys Flyweight (50kgs) division.

Garces also defeated Argate during the gold medal round of the Visayas Area Eliminations held in Maasin City last March.

The action will shift to the open Digos City Plaza today with Cebu City’s Joe Paul John Tanudra opening his bid against J Mar Jaga of Bago City in the School Boys Paperweight (44kgs) division semifinal round, Marvin Pomar will fight Edgar Gaviola of PacMan-Digos City team in the Jr. Boys Pinweight (46kgs) match and Marco Pomar will try to get to the next round when he fight Jovane Casim of CDO in the Youth Boys Light Flyweight (49gks) class.
