AFTER representing the country in the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) qualifier in Kazakhstan last June, Philippine junior national team triathlete Justin Chiongbian eyes a string of big races this year.
The Cebuano athlete gears up again today and will duke it out in the tough 16 to 19 years old junior elite race in the Tri- United in Playa Laiya, San Juan in Batangas.
Chiongbian will be joining the sprint distance and will face off formidable triathletes like Julius Constantino, Edward Macaladlad, Louie Lalanto, John Argosino, Alonzo Magadia and Tyhrone Calibuso.
After the local race, Chiongbian will join the international triathlon competition in Singapore on Aug. 16 and the ITU Asian Cup on Oct. 25 in Hong Kong.
The Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-ADC) stalwart, who trained in Portugal for his bid in YOG qualifier, said that he learned a lot and improved from the 35 days of training under renowned coach Sergio Santos last April.
“I’ve met great young athletes there, and it was really a great experience. It had a healthy atmosphere for young triathletes,” said Chiongbian.
“I’ve learned a lot of things there, especially in training techniques and being independent.”
When asked what disciplines in the multi-sport have improved the most when he underwent in the international training, the promising 16-year-old said, that all of the three disciplines have improved.
“My game has improved, especially in the run. It is good to have that training. And I think it is the best training for us (national athletes) to improve,” said Chiongbian.
Meanwhile, Justin, a student of SHS-ADC, will be joining the 6K division of, St.Ignatius Run on July 13 at South Road Properties. (RSC)
