ERIC Kelly is back!
Following a long absence in the ONE FC, Kelly is back in title contention in the featherweight division after a win via submission over tough Aussie Rob Lisita in last Friday at the NTU Sports Center in Taipei, Taiwan.
Last year, the 32-year-old Kelly faced fellow Filipino Honorio Banario for the ONE FC featherweight crown. Kelly suffered an eye injury in the fourth round and Banario was awarded with the technical knockout victory to become the inaugural featherweight champion of the biggest MMA promotional outfit in Asia.
Last night, Kelly showed why he is one of the best MMA fighters from the Philippines after overcoming adversity and sinking in a rear-naked-choke, forcing Lisita to tap out the second round.
Kelly, bleeding profusely from the nose, reversed position and took Lisita’s back and forced him to submit him in the 3:43 mark. He earned $50,000 ONE Warrior bonus.
Kelly got his got his ninth submission victory and improved to 11-1, while the 31-year-old Lisita dropped to 14-6, ending a four-fight winning streak.
Kelly is in a great position for a title shot against current ONE FC featherweight king Koji Oishi, who owns two knockout wins over Banario.
In the co-main event of ONE FC – “War of Dragons”, Japanese Koji Ando (10-3-2) handed Brazilian Rafael Nunes (10-1) his first defeat with a first-round rear-naked-choke submission win.
Japanese bantamweight Koetsu Okazaki (10-3-1) scored a second round technical knockout victory over Yusup Saadulaev (12-4-1). (EKA)
