WITH football slowly gaining popularity in this basketball-mad country, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is also aggressively promoting a different version of the beautiful game—futsal.

Yesterday, the PFF and the Cebu Football Association (CFA) staged the first Futsal Grassroots and League Development Workshop in the Abellana National School AVR. It was spearheaded by PFF head of competitions department Cyril Dofitas and Porferio Barlas Jr., a futsal referee instructor and former Fifa referee in futsal.

Futsal or futebol de salão, a Portuguese term meaning hall football, is a version of football that is usually played indoors with fewer players.

“It is a form of the game that can be played regardless of the weather. It is more accessible and needs fewer players,” Dofitas told Sun.Star Cebu last Saturday on the first day of a two-day workshop.

The first day of the workshop was well attended with 38 participants.

Among the topics discussed by the lecturers were Futsal Grassroots Development Program, Objectives of the Program, Special Features of Futsal, Development of Players, Futsal as Compliment to Football, Basic Coaching for Futsal and Refereeing.

The workshop also included a practicum on Organization of Training Session and Refereeing plus lectures on league development and tournament organization. The event ended with futsal matches.

The CFA will aggressively promote futsal in Cebu City because of its president Ricky Dakay, is now the PFF Chairman of the Technical Committee.

The Philippines now has a pro football league, the United Football League (UFL), and a national squad that is competitive.

The PFF also wants to form a competitive team for futsal.

“That’s the direction to come up with a league and, if given an opportunity, make it a pro league,” said Dofitas. “We are still developing. We will come up with more programs so that we can be competitive with our neighboring countries.” EKA
