AS expected, defending national juniors champion Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano bagged a slot to the national finals after ruling the 20-year-old and under division of the 22nd Shell National Active Youth Chess Championships held in SM City Consolacion Event Center yesterday.

Sevillano, who was trailing by half a point after five rounds, gave up a draw on his final four matches on his way to topping the Cebu elimination leg after acquiring 8.0 points for the solo victory.

Claiming the second slot to the national finals in October was University of San Carlos varsity player Vincent Balena, who had the superior tiebreak point over No. 2 seed Felix Shaun Balbona, who won the Cebu Leg tournament last year, and No. 3 seed Allan Pason of the University of San Jose-Recoletos, who all finished with 7.5 points.

Sevillano’s draws were against USC-Basic Education Department teammates John Francis and Balbona in the final round.

Balena beat Jethro Esplanada in the final round, while Pason defeated Adrian de la Cruz to get into the joint 2nd to 4th places.

Adelaide Lim from the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City was the top performer in the women’s division to join Sevillano and Balena to the national finals in October.

Vic Glysen Derotas topped the 14-year old Kiddies Division title. RCM
