BACK-to-back Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) gold medalist Daryl Manuz took advantage of the absence of some Kenyan long-distance runners to rule the men’s 21K category of the Cebu Landmasters Inc.St. Ignatius Run yesterday at the South Road Properties (SRP).
The 22-year-old Alcoy-native broke away in the final five kilometers to win the race in 1:16 minutes, just a minute off his personal best.
“I was leading all the way in the remaining 5K of the race. Medyo dili kay nako kabisado ang rota niya straight pud kaayo,” Manuz calmly told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday. “Kung naa ang Kenyans mo second ko, niya naa pud usahay maka-first sad.”
The third year Electrical Engineering student of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) won the 3K, 5K and 10K gold medals in the Cesafi for the past two years.
Michael Largo and Sherwin Manangil placed second and third, respectively. Organizers were not able to provide the official time of all winners at press time yesterday.
In the women’s side, Ruffa Sorongan reigned supreme in the 21K, en route to her second run title this month. She also topped the women’s 15K run in the Dagan Na, Sikad Na, Tabang Pa last July 6. Lorhiz Echavez-Lopez, on the other hand, who is preparing for the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines on Aug. 3, placed second and was followed by Jade Abellana.
“Hopefully, next month my performance would be okay. I’m targeting a 1:50 run split in the Ironman. I think I have improved compared to last year,” said Lopez, who will compete in the women’s Filipino elite for the first time.
In the alumni category, Dr. Potenciano “Yong” Larrazabal III topped the men’s 21K. This was his second participation in the annual run, and he was also the winner of alumni 10K last 2010.
“It was a successful run. The route was nice, and this is the first run I’ve attended—including the international races—that offered a mass after the race,” said Larrazabal.
The fourth edition of St. Ignatius Run was hosted by Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-ADC) batch 1989. Parts of the proceeds will be used for the construction of the ADC Teachers’ Dormitory. RSC
