RENOWNED Olympian coach Sergio Santos handled young Cebuano triathlete Justin Chiongbian in a 35-day training in Portugal last May. As it turns out, that is going to be start of a six-year program.

The fourth year student of Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-ADC) told Sun.Star Cebu that he was picked to join a training program with Santos for six years. This means Chiongbian will be going to Portugal during his free time to train.

“That started last June and I will be going to Portugal this October to train for six weeks,” said Chiongbian.

“Coach Santos personally picked him during the training. He saw the potential of Justin and offered to handle him for six years,” said Millette, Chiongbian’s mother.

Justin, a junior national team member, trained with Santos together with two teammates to prepare for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) qualifier last June 1. Santos is a renowned Portuguese Olympic coach who has produced a number of Olympians in his coaching stint.

“I have to go to Portugal to train, because he (Santos) can’t come here because of his busy schedule. He is also handling the Brazilian and Portuguese team for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics,” said Justin.

Going international might just be the initial plan for the promising triathlete as he is also seriously considering to continue his studies abroad.
