ROAD cyclist Nestor Juntilla dashed to the finish line to edge out Rene Lumongsod to salvage the golden men’s division title in the Stage 2 of Yukon Cycling Classic yesterday in Mandaue City.
Juntilla dug deep into his bag of tricks when he out-sprinted Lumongsod to the finish line in 1 hour 4 minutes and 49 seconds in the 36-kilometer race.
The two men were in the lead group at the 10th lap along with lone female cyclist Ana Patricia Maximo, the road cycling champion of the 2014 Batang Pinoy National Finals. However, Maximo was dropped from the lead pack with a break away in the 13th lap. The two remaining laps were neck-and-neck between Juntilla and Lumongsod, with the former threading the needle to take the win.
Maximo, a grade nine student of Sacred Heart School Hijas de Jesus, trailed 25 seconds from the winners to round up the top three.
The competition also had the intermediate sprint race in the 10th lap, which is won by Juntilla, Maximo came in second, and Lumongsod was the third best sprinter.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s Category C, Loloy Berdon and Leonard Talimporos of Lapu-Lapu City took the first and second places, while Dondon Solon settled for third place.
