THE University of the Visayas (UV) exacted their revenge against the defending Passerelle division champions University of San Carlos (USC), 50-46, in the semifinals of the Milo Best SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament Cebu Leg in the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) gym.
The Baby Green Lancers, who lost to USC in the finals, 57-47, last year, will face SHS-AdC in the finals next week.
UV had a quick start and led 15-5 at the end of one quarter. The hard-working Baby Green Lancers continued to push and widened the gap to 31-15 at halftime.
USC started to pick up the slack and trimmed down the lead, 40-26, after outscoring UV in a quarter for the first time, 11-9, in the third quarter.
In the fourth, USC looked like its dominant self in the fourth and had a 15-6 run anchored on the sweet shooting of Jholo Pakanna to cut the lead to four, 46-42, with 2:25 left. However, USC’s inaccuracy at the free throw line would spell doom.
John Igot scored a basket to make it a six-point game and Chavez got fouled but split his free throws to trim it to 48-43. USC stifling defense forced UV to miss their shots and John Gonzaga then made one of the biggest plays of the game and intercepted a pass and connecting with Denzel Sabroso for a fast break layup to make it 48-45.
Joshua Laurente quickly answered with a layup plus a foul with just 15 seconds remaining to make it 50-45. However he missed his shot but Neon Chavez made an offensive rebound and was fouled in the process with 13 seconds left.
Chavez missed both charities but Joemari Ranuco got the offensive rebound and was also fouled with nine seconds left. He hit just one of two free throws, 50-46.
Ranuco fouled James Zenarosa with six seconds and missed both free throws but Igot grabbed the rebound but the ball went out of bounds.
USC gained the possession with three seconds left but Zenarosa stole the inbound pass to seal UV’s win.
Sabroso led UV with 12, while Igot added eight. Ralph Bande was USC’s top scorer with 10.
SHS-AdC earned a trip to the Passerelle division championships after a comfortable 59-40 win over Cebu Eastern College in the other semifinal match.
Andrew Velasco led SHS-AdC with 17, scoring eight in the final stretch, while Steven Co, Benedict Chua and Lyder Canieso combined for 23 points.. Crafty guard Ryan Tecson scored 15 points for CEC.
The Passerelle division championship match between UV and SHS-AdC will be on Saturday at the Capitol Parish Gym after the battle for third place between CEC and USC at 1 p.m.
Meanwhile, USC and SHS-AdC continue to dominate the SBP division.
The towering USC SBP squad posted a lopsided 48-15 victory over a scrappy UV team, while SHS-AdC cruised past Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC), 60-31.
CEC beat USJ-R, 48-41, in the other SBP division game.
