CEBU’s top mountain biker Niño Surban confirmed yesterday his participation in the men’s elite cross-country race on Aug.15 to 17 in Masilou Highlands Kundasang, Malaysia despite being kicked off the RP squad.

Surban was in doubt if he can go to Malaysia after he was removed from the cycling national team pool last June even after finishing with a gold medal in the Philippines National Games (PNG) in Tagaytay.

Danao City Administrator Oscar “Boying” Rodriguez thinks that the Phillippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Integrated Cycling of the Philippines (PhilCycling) did not seem to consider that win as a factor when they decided to drop Surban for younger cyclists.

“Although the intent is good to develop new talents. But for Surban they did not see that he is still 27 years old and is still on his prime and has a lot left in his tank,” said Rodriguez, who has been with Surban from the start of his cycling career, “Nino has more years in his career and can still perform in a highly competitive level.”

In Malaysia, the racers will duke it out for the top five spot. The tournament series overall winners will also be determined. The points from the different series will be tallied to determine the Asean MTB Cup over-all winners.
