TO continue the advocacy for road safety, Mapfre Insular will hold its third running event dubbed Run for Road Safety 2014 on Sept. 14 at Plaza Independencia.

The organizers are inviting runners and fitness enthusiasts to take part in this footrace. This is set to be their biggest footrace in three years with 4,000 participants expected.

The event aims to ensure safer roads for commuters, pedestrians, drivers, as well as traffic law enforcers. Mapfre partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd) since 2010 through Fundacion Mapfre, which promotes road safety among students in inclusion of the topic in the school curriculum and distribution of around 600,000 learning materials and aids to elementary students.

The race will have three open categories—the 12-km., 6K and 3K. The organizers tapped the DepEd to invite five elementary schools in Cebu with students in Grades 5 to 6 set to join—for free and will also be given race shirts—in the 1K dash and 500m dash categories.

“We are taking education outside the classroom, to make the students aware of the safety in the streets take safety precautions,” said Tamayo.

Road safety park

After the footrace, the students will be taken to the “road safety park” where the road signage and other road etiquette signs are posted for hands-on and practical discussion.

“We believe road safety is a critical public health issue that everyone should support. Hence, the Run for Road Safety is our way of reaching out to the public. This also complements the work of Fundación Mapfre with the DepEd. Mapfre Insular has been providing books and teaching aids for the past three years,” Tamayo added.

Mapfre has been an advocate in road safety because they believe it is a public health issue worldwide.

Registration

Registration fees for the open categories are at P600 for the 12K, P450 for the 6K, and P350 for the 3K, inclusive of race shirt, race bib, loot bag, and finishers’ certificate. The elementary students in 1K dash and 500m dash are free of charge.

Interested parties can visit Runnr at Ayala Center starting Aug. 22 to Sept. 13, while online registration is available at race.ph, blog.mapfre.com.ph/run-for-road-safety, and Facebook.com/MAPFREInsularInsurance.

Upon registration, participants are encouraged to sign the Road Safety Pledge form available online and make a commitment to keep the Philippine roads safe for all.
