Top guns in JRG Cup-A A +A

SEVERAL seeded players nationwide are expected to compete in the 19th JRG Gullas Cup this Aug. 21-24, 2014.
The tournament, considered the third junior running tennis tournament, was usually held every summer, but the organizing committee decided to hold it outside summer this year.
“Before, the tournament was done during summer, but due to a lot of tournaments during this time, we decided to hold it outside summer season,” said tournament organizer John Pages during yesterday’s press conference.
Pages was joined by University of the Visayas (UV) executive vice president Jose “Dodong” Gullas, tournament director Fritz Tabura and Citigreen’s Sally Mae Siso.
This year, the tournament will be held for the first time in two covered courts-Citigreen Tennis Resorts and at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.
Siso, who is a former top age grouper and has played in this tournament since she was
nine years old, said this tournament would give the participants a different experience because the players will not be playing under the heat of the sun.
“One factor that will drain the player easily is the heat and this is the first time in this tournament that it will be played indoor, so the players will be in good condition, but will have to deal with the new red surface,” said Siso.
The tournament, which is sanctioned Group 2 by the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta), is expected to draw top caliber players. However, Cebu will be banking on several seeded players such as Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) junior player Arthur Craig “Iggy” Pantino.
This year, the 21-under age group will not be included and all the reigning champions in the different age groups, both in the boys and girls divisions, are expected to defend their respective titles except for Joshua Kinaadman.
Gullas said he is overwhelmed by how the tournament evolved through the years, since 1995, and is proud to have produced several top age groupers such as the Siso siblings and many others.
Pages said they are looking at upgrading the tournament to Group 1, and hopefully in time for next year’s 20th edition.
