TEAM Black pulled off a win over Team White, 8-4, to take the championship trophy in the first Hipodromo one-day league softball tournament last Sunday at the Labangon Elementary School grounds.
The Black squad barely escaped team Red, 9-8, in the first game to advance to the final showdown. Team White, on the other hand, reigned over Team Blue, 34-20, to likewise advance to the final game. In the finals, Team Black leaned on its grit against Team White to remain unbeaten en route to taking the top spot in the podium.
The battle for third place, went down the wire with Teams Red and Blue in a rubber match before Red sneaked past Blue, 13-11, to take the third place, while the Blue slide down to fourth place.
Aside from the team awards, individual recognitions were also given to the players.
The Most Valuable Player plum was given to Cherwin Maghanoy, the best pitcher was Koko Pautan, Reuben Opoc Buenavista was named as the best hitter, while Cerelo Quiñanola was named as the best catcher.
Gabriel Opoc won the Home Run King award, John Paul Magno bagged the Run Batted in award, Gilbert Maga was awarded for the Best Play of the Game, Olong Rosaroso took the Most Improved Player award, and Picol Magno had the Mr. Ben award.
The one-day softball tournament—exclusive for residence of Barangay Hipodromo—was held to recruit 15 battlers for the newly-formed Hipodromo Softball Team, who are planning to join local softball tournaments. Before the tournament, the organizers and players have elected officials of the newly created Hipodromo Softball Club.
