THE Philippines kicked off its campaign in the 23rd Fiba Asia U18 championship in style, routing Jordan, 85-60, in Group A.

The Philippines, which is already assured of a spot in the second round because there are only three teams in Group C, will take on South Korea next.

Ranbill Angel Tongco led the Philippines with 24 points—including two three-pointers, while Joshua Andrei Caracut had 11. Paul Desiderio and Manuel Mosqueda also chipped in 10 points each from the bench.

Tongco shot 11 of 16 from the field in 25 minutes of action.

After taking a 14-13 lead in the first quarter, the Philippines outscored Jordan 30-13 in the second quarter for a comfortable 44-26 lead.

“I think we were selfish in the first quarter. I just allowed them to make their mistakes and settle down on their own,” Philippines coach Michael Ray Jarin told Fibaasia.net

Jarin also coached the Philippine team that finished 15 of 16th in the Fiba U17 World Championship in Dubai. The U17 team earned the slot to the world championship after finishing second in the Fiba Asia U16 championship in 2013 in Iran.

On the other hand, Batang Gilas is fighting for one of three spots in the Fiba U19 World Championships in 2015.

One of the highly-touted members of the team, Kobe Paras, the son of the former PBA legend who now plays high school basketball in Los Angeles, had a quite six points.

He made only 2 of 7 shots and was 2 of 6 from the line in just over 21 minutes of action.

“I gave him the minutes and wanted him to avoid the fourth foul. I think he handled the situation well,” Jarin told Fibaasia.net.
