THE University of San Carlos nearly lost a 30-point lead but held on to beat the University of Cebu Webmasters, 74-65, to strengthen their hold of second place in the 2014 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament in the Cebu Coliseum last Tuesday.

In the high school division, the Don Bosco Technological Center will play UC at 1 p.m., while USC will try to stay unbeaten against the Cebu Institute of Technology-University at 2:30 p.m..

The Warriors imposed their superiority early, holding UC to just six and eight points in the first two quarters, respectively, to build a 42-14 lead at halftime. Prince Malana had eight points, while Ian Tagapan and Espoir Toyambi combined for 14 points in the first quarter.

USC then logged its biggest lead at 48-18 at the 7:42 mark of the third before everything went downhill for the Cebu Landmasters-backed Warriors.

It began with a second chance basket of Junas Misa, that was followed by a triple and a jumper by Jan Auditor as UC outscored USC, 23-9 in the last 6:30 of the third period.

USC reinstalled a 20-point lead twice in the first four minutes of the fourth period but UC did not give and even cut the lead to seven despite Auditor fouling out in the final 3:30. Justine Dacalos had nine of UC’s 20-7 end game blast, while shooter Olago scored the final two points from the free throw line for final count.

Toyambi topscored in USC’s third win in four games with 13 points, while Dacalos scored the game-high 15 points for UC.

Auditor and Carlos Tabaquero also added 10 points each.
